Kienle, Cave win Miami 70.3

Sebastian Kienle’s red-hot bike split outpaced Michael Raelert’s second comeback effort and Leanda Cave defended her title with a dominating swim, bike and run at Ironman 70.3 Miami Sunday.

Kienle, who added the Miami title to a 2011 season that included wins at Buschhetten and New Orleans 70.3 and second place finishes at Roth and Challenge Kraichgau, fell 3:14 behind the 2009 and 2010 Ironman 70.3 World Champion after the swim, then blitzed by everyone but Richard Allen with a race-best 2:01:54 bike that outpaced Raelert by 5:16 and Matt Reed by 5:05.

Starting the run 26 seconds back of Allen’s 26:04 swim and second-fastest 2:03:30 bike, Kienle uncorked a 1:13:53 run in Miami’s heat that gave back 39 seconds to Raelert but got him to the finish in 3:47:01 with a winning margin of precisely one minute over Raelert and 2:36 over third place Matt Reed, who closed with a third-best 1:14:38 half marathon.

Raelert’s 2nd place effort marked his second race back from a hip injury that cost him nearly the entire 2011 season and forestalled his planned defense of his Ironman 70.3 world title and debut at Ironman Hawaii.
Raelert's first race back was a win at Austin 70.3.

Alberto Casadei of Italy, who virtually matched Matt Reed through the swim and bike, gave up 90 seconds to Reed’s 1:14:48 run which propelled him past Allen’s 1:19:04 run to 4th, 9 seconds ahead of the Englishman’s 5th place effort.

Leanda Cave dominated the women’s race with a wire-to-wire victory that included race-bests at the swim (27:01) bike (2:20:39) and run (1:22:42) that culminated with a 4:13:35 finish and a 7:37 margin of victory over Canadian Magali Tisseyre and 9:36 over third-place finisher and fellow Brit Emma-Kate Lidbury.

Jessica Muzos of Tulsa, Oklahoma took 4th in 4:24:13 and Amanda Felder Derkacs of Cupertino, California took 5th in 4:29:23.

Cave’s victory added to her 2011 season wins at Wildflower, the Desert Duathlon, and Rev 3 Knoxville, in addition to her career-best 3rd at Ironman Hawaii, and second places at Escape From Alcatraz, Vineman 70.3 and Kansas 70.3.
