Jones, Bevilacqua win New York 5i50
Jordan Jones of Golden, Colorado and Amy Bevilacqua of Wilton, Connecticut won the New York City 5i50 Triathlon Sunday.
Jones combined a 10th-best 12:26 swim in the current-abetted Hudson River, a race-best 56:02 bike split and a 2nd-fastest 32:32 run to finish in 1:45:04 with a 1:34 margin of victory over runner-up Ben Collins and 2:27 over third-place Kaleb Vanort.
Bike ace David Thompson was 4th in 1:47:52, ITU star Matt Chrabot 5th in 1:49:36, and 2011 Ironman World Championship runner-up Pete Jacobs of Australia was 6th in 1:49:57.
Bevilacqua finished in 2:00:04 and used a race-best 1:03:36 bike split to hold off Liz Blatchford's race-best 35:23 run by 20 seconds. Jenna Parker used a 2nd-best 1:06:13 bike and 4th-best 37:17 run to take 3rd in 2:00:57.
After a 14:52 swim, Bevilacqua had to overcome a 2:55 deficit to Sara McLarty and Lauren Brandon and an approximate 1:35 deficit to a pack of four including Blatchford, Parker, Laurel Wassner and Anna Battiata.
Bevilacqua's 1:03:36 bike split took care of that deficit and more – it was between 2:30 to 4 minutes faster than her closest pursuers. While Bevilacqua's 36:24 run gave back 1:01 to Blatchford's race-fastest 35:23 10k, the winner outran everyone else.
