Rana, Boterenbrood win Lanzarote 70.3

Ivan Rana of Spain dominated the run to win the men’s title and Danne Boterenbrood of the Netherlands edged Sophie De Groote of Belgium with a better swim to take the women’s victory at Ironman 70.3 Lanzarote.

Rana, the 2002 ITU Olympic distance World Champion who finished 7th at the recent ITU Grand Final in Auckland, combined a 6th-best 22:17 swim, a 3rd-best 2:27:43 bike on Lanzarote’s daunting volcanic hills, and zoomed past leader Ronnie Schildknecht with a race-best 1:13:27 run. Rana finished in 4:07:35 with a 3:52 margin of victory over the Swiss Ironman star, who burst into the lead with a race-fastest 2:24:26 bike leg and finished with a 1:18:51 run. Boris Stein of Germany took 3rd, 5:24 back of the winner.

Boterenbrood, 27, who studied medicine at the University of Groningen and has 4 top 10 finishes at ITU events, led the swim with a 24:05 split which gave her a 2:53 margin over Belgian long distance star Sophie De Groote. Boterenbrood gave back 1:25 to De Groote’s race-fastest bike split with a 2nd-best 2:44:55 split to lead by 1:28 at T2. Boterenbrood lost just one second to De Groote with a 6th-fastest 1:26:29 run to finish in 4:40:05 with a 1:50 margin of victory.

Sonja Tajsich of Germany was 5:14 down starting the run and made up 2:04 with her 4th-best 1:24:25 run to take 3rd, 3:58 behind Boterenbrood. Katja Konschak of Germany lost 13 minutes on the bike but unleashed the women’s race-fastest 1:20:47 run to finish 4th, 8:11 back of the winner.
