Stolz, Vanlandingham in Brazil
South African Conrad Stoltz grabbed his second XTERRA Brazil title today, having won the inaugural race back in 2005. Shonny Vanlandingham from the United States earned her 3rd title there since 2010, but according to XTERRA sources each of those 3 titles happened at a different venue in Brazil.
In the men's race, fellow South African Dan Hugo was actually in the lead during the bike when he encountered a cleat issue. "Soon after I could not power equally, and then could not un-clip at a hike a bike portage. Having toppled over like an empty sack of potatoes I did a three sixty with my shoes. The ship is sinking. At the top of that portage I couldn’t engage the cleat again, after inspection appreciated the dilemma of a one missing screw," reported Hugo on his blog, taking full credit for the recent cleat swap transaction and expecting unkind words from his mechanic.
With this second XTERRA Brazil win Stoltz now has an astonishing 47 XTERRA titles to his name. Defending champion Felipe Moletta finished second and Hugo held on to the final podium spot.
Just like Stoltz, Vanlandingham also had quite a dominating win in Brazil. The fast American finished almost 20 minutes ahead of runner-up Sabrina Gobbo and more than 20 minutes in front of third place finisher Daz Parker from the UK.
