Limkemann, Williamson at Williamsburg

Super swimmer Eric Limkemann and super runner Kelly Williamson won the Rev3 Williamsburg Half titles by very different margins.

Men

Limkemann started his day with a fine 26:27 swim that gave him 2:15 lead on Rev3 star Richie Cunningham and 2:52 on superb cyclist David Thompson. Limkemann then took the race by the throat with a sizzling 2:05:50 bike split that was 5:20 faster than Cunningham and 3:13 faster than Thompson (and 1:35 better than legendary cyclist Andrew Starykowicz). Starting the run, Limkemann had a 6:03 lead on Thompson and 7:35 on Cunningham. While both chasers cut into Limkemann’s lead on the run, neither had enough foot speed to take him down. Limkemann’s 1:19:21 half marathon brought him to the finish in 3:53:41. Cunningham’s 1:17:05 run was enough to pass Thompson and earned him the runner-up slot, 5:20 behind Limkemann. Thompson’s 1:18:54 run held 3rd place, 17 seconds behind Cunningham. Fastest run belonged to Kevin Collington in 1:13:58.

Women

Kelly Williamson exited the swim just 50 seconds ahead of Margaret Shapiro. After that, it was a battle of strength versus strength that ended just 16 seconds apart. On the bike leg, Shapiro uncorked a fabulous 2:19:52 split that was 10:25 faster than Williamson and gave the Herndon, Virginia mother a 9:02 lead on her Austin, Texas rival starting the half marathon.

On the deceptively energy-sapping hills on the run course, Williamson played her ace flat out and Shapiro fought back hard. But in the end, Williamson’s race-fastest 1:19:37 run was 9:58 faster than Shapiro’s half marathon – just enough to get Williamson to the finish in 4:23:29 with a 16 seconds margin of victory.
