Docherty tops men, Kessler shines in comeback at Vineman 70.3
Olympic silver and bronze medal winner and 2004 ITU World Champion Docherty, who signaled he could be a serious contender at Kona with a big win at Ironman New Zealand, set a course record of 3:45:10 in holding off Tim Reed, Terenzo Bozzone, Joe Gambles and Tim Don at the wine country classic. Docherty took control with a race-fastest 2:06:48 bike split that was 90 seconds to 2:30 better than his closest challengers. Docherty’s 3rd-fastest 1:12:16 run brought the Kiwi to the finish with a 2:04 margin of victory over Reed and 2:11 over Bozzone.
While Docherty set a men’s course record, Kessler gave the performance of the day as she combined a women’s race-best 25:03 swim, a 2nd-fastest 2:22:49 bike split and a race-fastest 1:20:46 half marathon to finish in a swift 4:13:18 with a 1:51 margin of victory over star 70.3 performer Heather Jackson and 6:27 over Amy Marsh.
All in all, Kessler’s was a stunning performance just six weeks after she was knocked unconscious and hospitalized with head injuries suffered in a head on collision with an off course age group competitor at Eagleman 70.3.

Peter Henning will be 20th inductee into Ironman Hall of Fame
Ironman announced this week that Peter Henning, cameraman, director and producer of the Ironman World Championship broadcasts, will be inducted into the Ironman Hall of Fame during the 2013 Ironman Championship race week in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii this October.
“I am deeply honored to be included amongst some of the sports’ greatest names as part of the IRONMAN Hall of Fame,” Henning said in an Ironman media release.
“Millions of people were introduced to IRONMAN by Peter’s extraordinary broadcasts – there is no one who has better represented the IRONMAN ethos than Peter,” said Ironman CEO Andrew Messick.
In 1992 Henning covered his first IRONMAN triathlon in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i as a cameraman and in 2000 joined the World Triathlon Corporation as Senior Vice President of Television, supervising the production of all IRONMAN television broadcasts until October of 2012. During his 11 years, Henning led the broadcast to 17 Emmy Award nominations with seven wins.
Prior to his time with IRONMAN, Henning worked as a freelance cameraman, director and producer on ABC’s Wide World of Sports and numerous sport specials for major television networks. Henning has covered expeditions across Antarctica, The Raid Gaulloise, Eco-Challenge, Tour de France, and the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. Henning is the third media figure to join the Ironman Hall of fame, following nominations of Bob Babbitt in 2002 and Mike Reilly in 2011.
