Athletes outside of North America have asked often and a long time for a 70.3 World Championship race to be closer to them, and Europeans can now rejoice. The 2015 Ironman 70.3 World Championships will take place on August 30, 2015 in Zell am See / Kaprun in Austria.
In late November of 2013 it was announced that the field of competitors to host the race in 2015 had been narrowed down to 4 European cities – namely Haugesund (Norway), Region Moselle (Luxembourg), Nice (France) and Zell am See / Kaprun (Austria) and today the quaint Austrian sports center town at the foot of the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier got the official thumbs up.
Zell am See / Kaprun sits at 786 meters or 2,579 feet of elevation and is a popular and scenic tourism region about 80 kilometers away from Salzburg and roughly 200 kilometers from Munich, Germany. So either of these airports should find athletes well who plan to travel to this very beautiful region of Austria from further away.
There is plenty to do for athletes and family members with spas and mountains galore, and on the tourism website of Zell am See they proudly talk about the free Wi-Fi that is common including at the Kitzsteinhorn at 3000 meters, and that should make all tweeting and facebooking athletes happy.
More details about the race course and how this venue was selected will be revealed at a press conference at 2:00 PM CET on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at the M32 Auditorium in Salzburg, Austria.
Currently the region is covered in snow much to the delight of the fans of various winter sports, but you get the picture how stunning the area is.
