Collins, Kaye take New York City

Ben Collins and Alicia Kaye won the New York City Triathlon Sunday.

Collins banked a 2:09 lead after a race-best swim and bike legs, enough to ward off top rival Kaleb Vanort’s race-best 30:13 run and still come away with a 40 seconds margin of victory.

Chris Foster finished with a 3rd-fastest 31:20 run split to finish 3rd, 1:49 behind the winner.

The overall times were enhanced by record swim times – 11:03 for Collins’ 1500-meter split – with the strong positive current in the notably dirty Hudson River.

Collins’ won adds to his successes in 2014 –wins at Mt. Tremblant 70.3 and the Minneapolis round of the Life Time Fitness Series.

Alicia Kaye returned to her dominating 2013 form with a comfortable margin of victory over Radka Vodickova of the Czech Republic and 3rd place finisher Jillian Petersen of the U.S.

Lauren Brandon (11:48) and Sara McLarty (11:49) led the swim, followed closely by Katie Hursey (11:52), Vodickova (11:44) and Kaye (11:55). Whereupon Kaye unleashed a killer bike split of 1:03:24 which was 3 and one half minutes better than her nearest pursuers – McLarty (1:06:52) Vodickova, Petersen, Laurel Wassner, and Brandon.

Kaye sealed the victory with a women’s race-best 35:25 run which brought her to the finish in 1:54:52 with a 4:24 margin over Vodickova and 6:27 over Jillian Petersen.

Kaye’s victory was her first in 2014 after a 3rd at South Beach, a 4th at St. Anthony’s and a 2nd place at Cap Tex. The win is a return to her 2013 form in which she fashioned an impressive streak of wins at St. Anthony’s, Cap Tex, Muskoka 5i50, Minneapolis, Chicago, Dallas and Oceanside Life Time Fitness and also won the Life Time Fitness Series crown.
