Cook, Lagerstrom win Sarasota
U.S. competitors Summer Cook and Eric Lagerstrom won the Sarasota CAMTRI sprint triathlon Saturday on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Both improved one place on their 2nd place finishes last week at the Clermont CAMTRI Sprint.
Women
Four U.S. competitors were the first out of the water, led by last week’s Clermont CAMTRI runner-up Summer Cook (11:22), Heather Lendway (11:41), Julie Stupp (11:41) and Taylor Spivey (11:49). Next in line were Vanesa De La Torres of Mexico (11:55), Dominika Jamnicky of Canada (11:58), then three more U.S. contenders – Brianna Baird and Nicole Truxes (12:01) and Sinead O’Dwyer (12:04).
On the bike, Jamnicky pushed hard with a race-best 30:31 split to eke out a slim lead at T2 in an elapsed time of 43:32. Close behind were Lendway and Stupp (43:39), De la Torre and Spivey (43:40), Cook (43:52) and Baird (44:01).
Some call the run the leg of truth and Cook dominated with an 18:24 5k split that brought her to the finish in 1:02:05 with a 1:09 margin on De La Torre (19:36 run) and 1:18 on 3rd-place finisher Spivey, who closed with a 4th-fastest 19:44 split. Jamnicky ran 20:03 to take 4th place, 10 seconds behind Spivey. Calah Schlabach of the U.S. closed with a 2nd-fastest 18:55 run to finish 5th, 5 seconds back of Jamnicky.
Men
U.S. competitors Hunter Lussi (10:23) and Ian Boggs (10:25) were first out of the water, followed by Edson Gomez of Mexico (10:28), 4-time U.S. Olympian Hunter Kemper (10:29), and David Mendoza of Mexico (10:30). Twenty seconds further back was a larger pack including John Rasmussen of Canada, Eric Lagerstrom of the U.S., Rodolphe Von Berg of Italy – representing ITU, Diego Pres Flores of Mexico, Francis Lefebvre of Canada and Ryan Bice and Andrew Roos of the U.S.
The bike leg shook the order up but did not spread out the pack much. Eli Hemming of the U.S., who posted the 11th-fastest bike split of 26:24, led the way out of T2 in a combined time of 38:15 followed by U.S. contenders Hunter Kemper and Eric Lagerstrom (38:16), then Eduardo Moreno of Mexico, who posted the tied-for-best bike split of 26:04 and Alex Libin of the U.S., who posted a tied-for 4th best bike split of 26:08, both in a combined time of 38:17. They were followed by David Mendoza of Mexico (38:20), Valentin Rouvier of France (38:21), and Ricardo Cardenas of Mexico and Jason West of the U.S., both in 38:22.
Finally the run sorted out the field. Lagerstrom’s race-best 16:19 run led him to the finish in 54:32 with a 10 seconds margin on Eli Hemming (2nd-best 16:28 run), and 18 seconds on 3rd place finisher Jason West (3rd-best 16:29 run). David Mendoza of Mexico ran a 5th-best 16:36 5k to finish 4th, 3 seconds back of West, while Jeremy Briand of Canada was Canada’s best, 1 second back of Mendoza in 5th. Kemper started his campaign to make a 5th Olympic appearance with a 6th place finish, 5 seconds back of Briand.
