Cave, Diemunsch win Cannes

Leanda Cave of Great Britain and Etienne Diemunsch of France won the elite divisions of the 3rd annual Cannes International Triathlon.

Four time world champion Cave gained a 4:57 lead on Alexandra Tondeur with a 31:11 swim, gave back 3:03 on the bike leg and 12 more seconds on the run while finishing the race in 4:06:17 with a 1:25 margin of victory over her Belgian rival and 4:33 over 3rd-place Celine Bousrez of France.

Cave thus defended her 2015 Cannes title.

Diemunsch combined a 5th-best 29:50 swim, a 4th-best 2:06:51 bike split and a race-best 52:32 run to finish in 3:30:08 with a 29 seconds margin over runner-up Giulio Molinari of Italy and 1:44 ahead of 3rd-place finisher Andreas Raelert of Germany. Diemunsch fell behind Molinari by 1:03 on the swim and another 2:30 to Molinari’s 2nd-best 2:04:21 bike split before charging from behind on the run.
