Gomez, Lee top Europeans

Javier Gomez of Spain and India Lee of Great Britain won the elite titles at the ETU Olympic distance European Championship in Lisbon, Portugal.

Men

Gomez overcame an 11-seconds deficit and 9th place after the swim with a 2nd-best bike split and 3rd-best 31:25 run, giving him a 39 seconds margin of victory over Dmitry Polyanskiy of Russia (32:02 run) and 1:02 over 3rd-place finisher Andrea Salvisberg of Switzerland (32:31 run).

The victory gave the 5-time ITU Olympic distance World Champion, 2012 Olympic silver medalist, 2014 Ironman 70.3 World champion, and 2012 XTERRA World Champion his 4th ETU Olympic distance European Championship title.

Women

Lee overcame a 15th-fastest swim that gave her a 46 seconds deficit with a women's-best 1:06:05 bike split that was 53 seconds better than the next-best effort by swim leader Lucy Hall of Great Britain, 57 seconds better than 3rd-best swimmer Anne Haug of Germany, and 1:04 better than eventual runner-up Yulia Yelistratova of Ukraine.

Lee’s 10th-best 36:57 run surrendered 1:21 to Yelistratova, but the Ukrainian’s swim put her in too deep a hole to recover for the win. Lee finished in 2:04:03 with a 16 seconds margin of victory over Yelistratova (women’s-best 35:36 run) and 21 seconds ahead of 3rd-place finisher Zsófia Kovács of Hungary (women’s 2nd-fastest 35:38 run).

The win follows Lee’s recent victory at the Cagliari World Cup sprint in Italy.
