Gottwald, Christian win ITU AG standard distance worlds.
Lena Gottwald of Germany and Ryan Christian of Australia set the best overall times at the ITU Grand Final Age Group Standard Distance World Championship in Lausanne Sunday.
Gottwald finished the standard distance course in 2:12:44 to win the women’s 20-24 category and achieve an overall margin of victory of 1:32 over 30-34 winner Tracy Clinch of Australia and 2:54 over 3rd place women’s overall finisher and 25-29 winner Kristelle Congi of France.
Christian dominated the men’s field, winning the 30-34 category and finishing in 2:00:16 which won the overall with a 1:04 margin of victory over 35-39 winner Nikolaus Wihlidahl of Austria and 1:26 over 25-29 winner Oliver Crossley of Great Britain.
Three nations tied for national honors. The U.S., Germany and Great Britain each won five gold medals.
U.S. winners were Ginger Reiner in 40-44, Adrienne Leblanc in 50-54, Linda Robb in 55-59, Matt Murray in men’s 20-24 and Robert Skaggs in 50-54. Skaggs thus earned a rare 50-54 double gold medal haul, adding to his win in the sprint distance race Saturday.
German winners were Frank Manthey in 60-64, Lothar Stall in 65-69 and Heiko Hentrop in 75-79. Gottwald won gold in women’s 20-24 and Elisabeth Onisseit took gold in 75-79.
British AG champs were Gwen Kinsey in 45-49, Sarah Barrett in 70-74 and Daphne Bait in 80-84. Oliver Crossley won men’s 25-29 and Donald Brooks took honors in 40-44.
