Laine, Neumann win IM 70.3 Xian

On a day when the swim was canceled, Kinsey Laine’s women’s-best bike and run splits gave her a 10:36 margin of victory and Max Neumann of Australia’s race-best bike split led to a narrow men’s victory at Ironman 70.3 Xian.

Women

After a women’s-best 2:18:49 bike split, Kinsey Laine of the U.S. led Mary Robbins of the U.S. by 1:52, Anna Eberhardt of Hungary by 7:20 and Kirralee Seidel of Australia by 8:10.

By the 5 kilometer mark of the run, Laine stretched her lead to 5:58 on Robbins, 8:17 on Seidel, 8:43 on Eberhardt and 10:45 on Laurel Wassner of the U.S.

After a women’s-best 1:27:45 half marathon, Laine finished in 3:48:40 with a 10:36 margin of victory on Eberhardt (1:30:58 run split) and 12:14 on 3rd place Laurel Wassner of the U.S. (1:29:57 run).

Laine’s win was the highlight of her 2019 season, after her 2nd place at Lima 70.3, 4th at Santa Rosa 70.3, 5th at Victoria 70.3 and 10th at Boulder 70.3.

Men

Neumann broke out fast on his way to a race-best 2:04:45 bike split that gave him a 3 seconds margin over Mark Bowstead of New Zealand, 44 seconds on Paul Schuster of Germany, 1:01 on Taylor Reid of New Zealand and 1:34 on Levi Maxwell of Australia.

After 8.8 kilometers of the run, Neumann stretched his advantage to 2:11 on Taylor Reid of New Zealand, 1:59 on Schuster, 3:56 on Jakub Langhammer of the Czech Republic and 4:12 on Timothy Winslow. After 12 kilometers of the run, Neumann had a 2:37 lead on Reid, 2:42 on Schuster, 5:54 on Langhammer and 7:14 on Winslow.

After a 2nd-fastest 1:14:36 run, Neumann finished in 3:21:09 with a 49 seconds margin of victory on Kalistratov, who closed fast with a race-best 1:13:16 run, and 1:59 over 3rd place finisher Schuster, who closed with a 1:15:34 run.

The win was Neumann’s 2019 highlight, which comes after a 4th at Busselton 70.3, 8th at Challenge the Championship and 10th at the Nur Sul World Cup.
