Brownlee, Adam tops at IM Busselton
Alistair Brownlee of Great Britain and Teresa Adam of New Zealand stood atop the podiums at Ironman Western Australia.
Men
Rebounding after his disappointing 21st place at Kona, two-time Olympic gold medalist Brownlee posted a race-record winning time at Ironman Western Australia.
Brownlee combined a race-best 46:29 swim, race-best 4:10:33 bike split and race-best 2:43:40 marathon to finish in 7:45:20 with a 10 minutes 20 seconds margin of victory over Matt Burton of Australia and 15:07 over 3rd place Tim van Berkel of Australia.
This performance was his second Ironman triumph coming after a 7:49:20 winning performance at Ironman Ireland at Cork in June.
Women
Teresa Adam notched her second Ironman triumph in 2019 after a win at Ironman Cairns in June. Adam broke the Busselton women’s bike and course record with a 4:32:53 split on her way to an 8:38:43 finish which gave her a 3:59 margin of victory over Sarah Piampiano of the U.S. and 10:58 over 3rd place finisher Gurutz Frades of Spain.
Adam’s bike split broke Mareen Hufe's previous women’s bike record by 9 minutes and Caroline Steffen's previous course record by 12 minutes. Gurutz Frades set the day’s women’s-best run with a 2:58:34 mark which fell 34 seconds short of Beth McKenzie’s race record 2:58:17 set in 2014.
Adam’s win was her second Ironman victory of 2019, coming after a win at Ironman Cairns in June.
