U.S. Takes 3 Golds at Abu Dhabi Paratriathlon Championship
The United States took three gold medals across the various divisions contested at Abu Dhabi's Paratriathlon Championships. In addition to the U.S. gold harvest, Jetze Plat of the Netherlands (PTWC), Susana Rodriguez of Spain (PTVI), and Alexis Hanquinquant of France (PTS4) finished 2021 in style, adding a World Title to their Paralympic golds.

PTWC Men
Double Paralympic champion Plat has not lost a race since 2015 and Abu Dhabi was no exception. Plat was first PTWC out of the water and stayed out front to the end, earning his 5th career World crown.

After the disappointment of her second-place finish at Tokyo Paralympics, Lauren Parker of Australia won by a decisive 3:55 margin over Brazilian Jessica Ferreira at Abu Dhabi.

Alexis Hanquinquant of France had a dominant year, claiming the PTS4 Paralympic, World and European titles before Abu Dhabi. Hanquinquant led runner-up Hideki Uda of Japan by 4:48 and 3rd-place finisher Alejandro Sánchez Palomero of Spain by 5:14.

U.S. competitor Chris Hammer won an unexpected gold in the Men’s PTS5 class, with an impressive run that was almost 40 seconds faster than anyone else, enough to outsprint two-times Paralympic champion Martin Shuzl in the last meters before entering the blue carpet. Two seconds behind Hammer at the finish line was Aleksandr Konyshev of the Russian Federation, while Brazil’s Ronan Cordeiro of Brazil finished third, 4 seconds back of the winner.

Dave Ellis of Great Britain with guide Luke Pollard, and Hector Catala Navarro of Spain with guide Angel Salamance, fought a fierce battle in PTVI. After missing the Tokyo PTVI Paralympic podium after an unfortunate crash, Ellis went all-out from the beginning in Abu Dhabi, leaving behind initial race rival Catala Laparra – Tokyo Paralympic silver medalist and twice World Champion. A magnificent run granted Ellis his third world title by 1:18 over Hector Catala Laparra. American Kyle Coon, in his World Para Triathlon debut, took the bronze, 2:50 behind the winner.

PTVI Women
Susana Rodriguez of Spain, who is used to infernally high temperatures training in her home country, claimed her third World title in a row, after a strong bike and run in Abu Dhabi heat. Italian Anna Barbaro fought a brief duel with Rodriguez, but after a penalty for leaving equipment outside the athlete’s transition box made things difficult for the Tokyo 2021 Paralympic silver medalist. Barbaro finished 2:59 behind the winner, with Alison Peasgood of Great Britain taking 3rd place, 15 seconds behind Barbaro.
