XTERRA to Rotate its World Championship
In what will be welcome news to many of XTERRA’s most ardent fans, the XTERRA World Championship will move from Maui to Trentino, Italy, and then to different locations. This year’s upcoming race in Trentino, at the foot of the Italian Dolomites, will take place in October 1, 2022. It is the first time since XTERRA’s start in 1996 that the World Championship won’t take place in Maui.
“Our vision is to rotate XTERRA Worlds through all continents, from Europe to Asia, Africa and the Americas,” said J-D Cousens, XTERRA VP of Operations & Global Marketing.
More XTERRA athletes and more iconic XTERRA race courses are in Europe, so the move to Trentino for the 2022 Championship is logical. The success of XTERRA’s events drove World Triathlon to acknowledge the format, which the world governing body calls Cross Triathlon.
XTERRA remains the most important brand in the Cross Triathlon calendar, with 45 off-road triathlons in 22 countries annually. In the description of the the Trentino event includes the sentence, "The concept is to provide a bona-fide world championship for amateur and elite off-road triathletes." The move to a rotating World Championship has been considered by many part of what makes a World Championship "bona fide" and is likely one the reason for this move.
