Thomas Hansmaennel, Tilda Mansson win Junior World Titles in Montreal
With the sprint distance Junior World Championships format changed to a duathlon due to heavy rains in previous days affecting water quality, Thomas Hansmaennel of France and Tilda Mansson of Sweden dominated the men’s and women’s fields in Montreal.
Junior Men
Twenty men formed a tight pack separated by just 5 seconds in the first run leg, then the lead pack increased to 35 during the 4-lap bike leg, hitting T2 in equally crowded conditions.
Hansmaennel and fellow Frenchman Leo Fernandez and Pablo Issoton took an early lead on the bike. Fabian Schonke of Germany and Van Lanen opened a small break that allowed the duo clear sailing into T2.
Luke Anthony of the U.S. led the field over the opening 300 meters, but Hansmaennel thereupon seized a commanding lead. Hansmaennel then posted a race-best 15:32 5k run that brought him to the finish in 51:40 with an 18 seconds margin on Toby Powers of Australia and 20 seconds over third-place finisher Reese Vannerson of the U.S.
“I wasn’t able to race the European Championships so this feels like the perfect result,” Hansmaennel told World Triathlon media. “I wasn’t disappointed at the switch to duathlon, and was just looking to save some legs at the end of the bike so I could go all out on that final run, and it worked.”

Junior Women
Following her Junior Women World Championship silver medal last year, Tilda Mansson of Sweden pulled away from Julie Behrens of Germany on the last lap, her 16:51 run bringing her to the line in 57:17 with a 12 seconds margin on Behrens and 46 seconds on third place finisher Livia Gross of Switzerland.
“I would have liked to have the triathlon, that’s what I came here for, but it’s the same for everyone,” Mansson told World Triathlon media. “I was very nervous today, but I think I handled it well. On the second lap I heard the gap was getting longer and just thought, don’t stop! My mother’s here and she supports me, and my brother who is my coach, so I’m very grateful to him too.”
Mansson, Behrens and Myral Greco of Italy led the opening run, chased by Clara Normand of Canada, Faith Sasso of the U.S. and Marcela Alvarez Solis of Mexico as the field entered T1. Entering the 4-lap, 20-kilometer bike leg, Solis took the early lead, followed by three Frenchwomen – Ilona Hadoum, Mansson and Noemi Beaulieu – then Elena Viejo Campos of Spain and Manon Laporte of France led the chase pack of 19 at T2.
After arriving at T2, Beaulieu led the field out on the run, with Julia Brocker on her shoulder and Mansson and Behrens looming close, ready to pounce, with Beaulieu, Brocker and Gross 25 seconds arrears at the bell. Midway through the final lap, Mansson made her move and finished with a 16:51 5k that brought her to the finish in 57:17 with a 12 seconds lead on Behrens and 46 seconds in third place finisher Livia Gross of Switzerland.
