Taylor-Brown and Hauser win Munich Super League Round Two

It was rainy and the bikes had to navigate corners where traction was at a premium. Conditions best suited for the master of slippery corners to be found in Munich this Sunday. That would be defending Super League Triathlon Championship Series champion, 2021 Olympic individual silver medalist, 2022 Commonwealth Games champion, 2020 ITU World Champion, and 2022 World Triathlon Sprint Champion – Georgia Taylor Brown.

In the SLT Enduro format, competitors navigate three back-to-back triathlons in the standard swim-bike-run order. And on the first bike leg Taylor-Brown charged out front, was never challenged and never looked back. British teammate Sophie Coldwell was next best, outsprinting London first round runner-up Taylor Spivey of the U.S. for second place.

At the end of the day, Taylor-Brown garnered the 15 points for the victory and her London-Munich combined total led Spivey 28-27, with Coldwell trailing in third place with 26 points.

Stage 1

Last week’s SLT winner Cassandre Beaugrand led after the swim but she and her Scorpion teammates Taylor-Brown and Emma Jeffcoat were beaten from the first short chute award by the Eagles’ Sian Rainsley, who ran quickly through T1. Beyond the short chute loss, the more dramatic moment came when Beaugrand just missed a crash ahead in the rain and thus became riding tentatively and dropped back.

At the same time, GTB kept her foot on the gas and stayed out front. While she retreated from contention for the win on the day, Beaugrand pushed hard on the run and clocked the day’s fastest run and thus garnered 8 valuable run points.

Stage 2

Starting the second of three stages – with no rest in between – Taylor-Brown started with a 21 second’s lead. But no rest for the weary Taylor-Brown, as Spivey, Coldwell and Rainsley went on the attack to close the gap on the swim. But on the Stage 2 bike lap, GTB pushed back and re-upped her lead to 20 seconds. As the short chute late race pass was already allocated to Rainsley. But by this point Taylor Brown was so far ahead she had it all sewed up.

Stage 3

On the final swim, Taylor-Brown was calm when she gave up a few seconds to Spivey, Coldwell and Rainsley. But once Taylor-Brown started the bike leg, the door to her chasers was firmly and finally shut. By the time Taylor Brown finished a comfortable run, she had won the day and took the time to bow at the finish in respect to the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

Matt Hauser took Second Place Last Weekend at SLT London, then Improved his lot with a Strong Day at Munich. September 11, 2022 – Munich

Once again, Hauser incurred a deficit to start his day – although this time not for an incorrectly called penalty – but he had to spend Stages 1, 2 and the swim and the bike of Stage 3 before it counted. For the first part of the Stage 3 run, Hauser was battling with five me including Vasco Vilaca of Portugal, and London SLT winner Hayden Wilde of New Zealand.

Stage 1 – Men

Team Sharks’ Tayler Reid of New Zealand led the swim and thus claimed the first short chute which he lent to Wilde. On the bike Valentin Wernz fought hard to win the second short chute, which he gave to Rhinos teammate Vilaca.

Jonny Brownlee was the unluckiest competitor as he dropped a chain and lost time so he had to work hard to fix it and could only advance to 5th place and Wilde grabbed the lead.

Stage 2 – Men

Kenji Nener of Japan led the second swim, chased hard by Hauser, Brownlee, Vilaca and Wilde. On the second run, Wilde unleashed his ace in the hole and took a 5-seconds lead – plus a short chute – on a brief rest before he leaped into the water for the final time.

Hauser faced a monumental task as he began that final swim with a 14 seconds deficit.

Stage 3 – Men

The pressure came on hottest in the final swim. When Hauser needed to deliver, he posted a 3:34 swim split which gained him 6 seconds on Vilaca and Nener and 10 seconds on Brownlee, 20 seconds on Wilde. That meant advantage Vilaca, who powered the bike to lead all the way to the final curtain – the run.

Coming into transition from bike to run, Vilaca got as little overexcited, losing control before racking. Vilaca and Wilde used their short chute advantages at the start of the run, but Hauser loomed just one second behind the leading duo. Undaunted, Hauser had the most energy in his tank as he ran asway to take the win,

Hauser this took the Round Two victory, and the series lead going into the SLT Round 3 Championship Series in Malibu this weekend. Vilaca, who had to ride Georgia Taylor Brown’s bike to 11th place last weekend, took second and Wilde was 3rd. Brownlee took 4th despite his earlier bike problems and Nener placed 5th.
