Gergo, Stuckrad Victorious at Shortened Challenge Budva-Montenegro
Due to temporarily limited resources and infrastructure construction, the usual half distance Challenge Budva-Montenegro was shortened to an Olympic distance event. Between that and a challenging date on the global triathlon schedule, so this year's field was lacking stars like last year’s winners Magnus Ditlev and Lucy Hall.
Nonetheless, Hungarian Badar Gergo put in a creditable performance – a 20:36 swim, a 58:33 split for the 40-kilometer bike, and a 39:21 split for the 10k run. Gergo’s 2:00:51 total outpaced Montenegro’s Dusan Milosevic by 5:39 and outran third place finisher Sebastian Garry of Great Britain by 5:50.
Sophia Stuckrad of Germany took the women’s crown with a 27:20 swim, a 1:07:01 bike split and a 42:34 10k run. Her 2:19:29 total time outshined her nearest competitor Jelena Tomasevic of Montenegro by 8:09 and 3rd place finisher Marion Klein of the Netherlands by 13:19.
