Hugo, Rabe rule Xterra South Africa

South African Xterra specialist Dan Hugo and 2008 ITU Under 23 World Championship bronze medalist and Rhodes scholar Mari Rabie both scored convincing wins at Xterra South Africa Saturday in Grabouw.

Hugo exited the swim second in 18:47, 40 seconds behind eventual runner-up Kent Horner, then blasted to the lead with a race-best 1:18:17 mountain bike over rugged Grabouw terrain, then sealed the deal with a race-best 45:25 10k trail run. Hugo crossed the line in 2:22:29, 7 minutes and 9 seconds ahead of Horner, while Germany’s Nico Pfitzenmaier took third place, another 2 minutes 8 seconds behind Horner.

Mari Rabie, who earned a bronze medal at the 2008 ITU Under 23 World Championship in Vancouver and finished 43rd at the Beijing Olympics, took a 2 and a half minute lead with a race-best 18:52 swim, lengthened that lead with a race-best 1:37:16 mountain bike, and sealed the deal with another race-best split – a 51:09 run – to hit the line in 2:47:17, 7th overall including the men, with an 11-minute advantage over runner-up Michelle Lombardi and 23-minutes 45-seconds margin over third place Hanlie Booyens.
