Brownlee, Jackson earn U23 Worlds titles
Jonathan Brownlee made it a perfect weekend for British Triathlon and the Brownlee family with his win in the U23 category after his brother Alistair won the Elite on the same day. Aussie Emma Jackson took charge very early and held on to win in the female U23 event.
The men
Jonathan Brownlee was one of the first out of the water and was always spotted near the front of the bike until the athletes reached T2. A fast transition catapulted the younger Brownlee in the lead and from there he just continued to get away from all other contenders. Brownlee was able to celebrate well before the finish line and earned the U23 World Championship title.
"I got a five-second lead pretty quickly and once I looked back and didn't see anyone with me, I pushed even harder and was able to make a big gap," said Brownlee. "It definitely wasn't an easy race for me though. I was really hurting by the time I got to the final lap and I didn't get to enjoy the finish until the last few meters."
There was quite a fight for the runner-up position and in the end Kiwi Ryan Sisson managed to get away from the German Franz Loeschke.
The women
Emma Jackson was first out of the water after the first swim lap and aadded a bit more time to that lead during the second lap. The young Aussie then jumped on her bike alone but was eventually joined by a group. But once the group reached T2, Jackson charged out very fast and stormed to her World Championship title.
"I've been focusing on this race all year long and was really hoping for a podium, so to come out here and win is a dream come true," said Jackson. "I always like to go out of transition hard to see what I can do and today I felt great for the whole run."
Canadian Kirsten Sweetland was chasing hard and pulled away from all other contenders, but could not catch the Aussie. But after an up and down season for the Sweetland, the runner-up spot in Budapest must have been sweet nonetheless. Emmie Charayron from France rounded out the podium.
