Vanort, McLane take USAT AG Nationals

Current National Duathlon Champion Kaleb Vanort of Mishakawa, Indiana won his second USAT national title of 2010 by a big margin, while Mandy McLane of Windemere, Florida held off the run of runner-up Cindi Bannink by seven seconds to take overall wins at the USAT Age Group National Championship at Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Vanort’s 1:52:16 finish time for the non-drafting Olympic distance event was 1 minute 57 seconds faster than the men’s elite winner, Australian pro Brendan Sexton. Vanort was 6 seconds behind eventual overall runner-up Doug Clark after the swim and bike. But the Indianan’s 31:59 run – 47 seconds faster than elite men’s winner Brendan Sexton’s – was 3:28 faster than Clark and provided nearly all of Vanort’s margin of victory.

While Vanort’s was an exceptional effort that topped overall men’s age group runner-up Doug Clark by 3:38, comparisons with the elite pros cannot be definitive because the age group bike and run courses were different and were conducted under different rules.

The age group bike course was a much more spread out, two-loop affair while the elites rode an 8-loop, 40k bike course under draft-legal rules that led to match-race style strategy rather than an all-out time trial effort. The age group 10k run course was a one-loop affair, while the elites ran four 2.5-kilometer loops in typical ITU World Cup and World Championship Series style.

Overall age group women’s winner Mandy McLane’s 2:09:14 finish time would have placed her third in the elite women, but was 5:01 slower than women’s elite winner, four-time ITU World Championship elite medalist Laura Bennett.

McLane started her day with a 23:06 swim which was 21 seconds slower than Bannink’s 22:45. McLane picked up 57 seconds with a 1:02:38 bike, then gave back 43 seconds on the run. This would have put her 7 seconds behind Bannink for the overall win if not for her 14-seconds swifter transitions which gave her the win.
