Chacon, Williamson take Rev 3 Costa Rica

Costa Rican pro Leonardo Chacon and Austin Texas pro Kelly Williamson won the Olympic distance pro division of the inaugural Rev 3 Costa Rica triathlon Sunday.

Chacon, whose best previous finishes included wins at ITU Continental Cups in Ixtapa, Bogota, Veracruz and Salinas and a 14th place at the 2007 ITU World Cup in Cancun, took the measure of a fairly deep international field with a strong bike that left him with a 3 minute lead at T2. At the finish, Chacon held on to a comfortable lead over runner-up Manny Huerta of the USA, who advanced from 5th after the bike, third place Brian Fleischmann of the USA who was tied for second after the bike, fourth place Richie Cunningham of Australia and 5th place Andrew Starykowicz of the USA. Matt Reed of the US came out of the water within a few seconds of the leaders but gradually faded on a hot day in Central America

Williamson emerged from the swim in a tight pack with Amanda Stevens and Hillary Biscay of the USA, then held on against a surge on the run by Australian Kate Major, a three-time Ironman Hawaii third place finisher, for the win. Annie Warner, who had a breakthrough win last year at Pacific Grove, trailed runner-up Major for 3rd, with Stevens 4th and Bree Wee of Kailua-Kona Hawaii 5th.
