Jordan Rapp tops Leadman 250
Surviving 97-degree heat, wicked winds, 5,000-plus feet of climbing on a 140-mile mountainous desert bike course, two-time Ironman champion Jordan Rapp won the inaugural Leadman Triathlon Life Time Epic 250 Saturday in a time of 9:32:19. “It’s the toughest race I’ve ever done,” Rapp told Leadman 250 media after finishing the 3.1 mile swim, 140-mile bike and 13.67-mile run that vanquished elite rivals Matt Lieto and Kevin Everett who withdrew due to exhaustion after finishing the brutal bike leg.
“I was Leadmanned,” said Lieto.
Angela Naeth of Canada, a multiple Ironman 70.3 podium finisher, won the women’s title and was the second overall finisher regardless of gender in a time of 10:29:43.
"Words fall short in describing today's Leadman Epic 250 race," tweeted Naeth. "But I'll try: A hot, hurtful hilly hurricane. The hardest…"
Troy Jacobson, the maestro of the Spinerval workouts, finished second male and third overall in a time of 10:33:24. “You don’t run the last leg of the Leadman,” said Jacobson. “You shuffle.”
Tara Norton of Canada finished second woman, 4th overall in a time of 10:56:06. “Oh God,” Norton told Leadman media. “That was hard.”
Katya Meyers of Solana Beach, California finished 3rd woman in 11:39:24. “That course was sadistic!” she tweeted after the race. “Happy to walk away with 3rd…scratch that. Happy to walk away period! A finish was a "W" today.”
Hillary Biscay, who finished 2nd at Ultraman last November, finished 4th woman at Leadman 250 in 11:41:41. She tweeted after the race: “That was epic indeed! We got what we came for. Happily smashed!”
The toughness of Leadman was underscored by the fact that the vehicle escorting leader Jordan Rapp ran out of gas.
Of the 44 starters of this brave endeavor, 19 individuals and 12 members of four teams finished.
