Following Up with FORM Swim
Since we last wrote about FORM Swim’s goggles, they’ve undergone a fair number changes. The core of the product remains the same — it’s a smart, heads-up display that can be used either in the pool or in open water (when paired with a compatible device) to deliver real-time swim metrics. As we wrote in our initial and long-term reviews, they do the most important thing you can ask out of any electronic in our space: they just work, out of the box, no questions asked. In a world getting more and more complicated when you buy things (I’m looking at you, hydraulic disc brakes and tubeless ready wheelsets), it’s a refreshing experience.
Let’s look at a few of their changes.
Pricing Model
FORM has moved back to a pricing system where the goggle is, well, the goggle. You purchase it for $249. That $249 also gets you a one year subscription to FORM’s premium features, which include their training plans libraries, custom workout and workout import tool (more on that in a minute), and being able to follow workouts in the goggle. After the year mark, you must maintain a $15/month subscription in order to continue to use those premium features; however, real-time metrics will still work.
It answers the one major complaint that Slowtwitchers had — where it felt like the app was the product, and the goggles were simply secondary to it. And at $249, it’s still a good value if you are the kind of athlete that thrives on real-time data. (You can read more about how real-time data can make you a better athlete in our series from Matt Fitzgerald.)
TrainingPeaks Integration
Coaches and coached athletes, rejoice. FORM Swim now supports swim workouts that are built in TrainingPeaks' Workout Builder to come over and be followed, just like any of FORM’s own custom swim plans or workouts. It’s a simple integration — use the FORM app on your phone to sync the accounts — and away you go.
This was another feature that was asked for frequently by forum members during our last review process. Testing here showed that, like with most things FORM, it worked as intended without any issues.
Replacement Parts
FORM now offers a nearly full suite of replacement parts for you to order and maintain your own set of googles. Replacement parts include eye seals, non-display lenses, charging cables, nose pieces, and head straps. Pricing is extremely reasonable for these pieces, considering that FORM’s products generally last (my pair was purchased in January 2020 and I’m still on the original seals, lenses, straps, etc.) with prices ranging between $8 and $15 for key goggle replacement pieces.
If you need to purchase a new display unit, or replacement goggle, you do so through customer service agents.
Conclusion
FORM continues to deliver one of the best tech products across the entirety of the swim / bike / run landscape. And now it’s more athlete friendly than ever. Most importantly, it still just works.
