2014 Ironman Kona – day 1
This may be the earliest we have ever reported from Kona, but we certainly did not hold back. Enjoy these impressions taken on Sunday in and around Kona.
Early in the morning the Path run filled Ali'i Drive with 5k and 10k runners.
Good times were had by all – at least as it appeared.
The custom painted race bike of defending champion Frederik Van Lierde on the way to get some love and attention before the big race on Saturday.
The names of Van Lierde's kids are on the Ceramic Speed pulleys.
Michelle Vesterby's husband Claus was also busy with a beautiful green bike.
This area will be packed with expo and demo ride tents by tomorrow.
Meanwhile downtown Kona has already been transformed into an Ironman village.
Sunday was maybe the last day where the swim wasn't completely packed with swimmers.
The pier was rather quiet too, and that place will certainly get busier each day now.
Beth Gerdes Walsh after her swim was rushing to get back to her husband Luke McKenzie and the baby Wynne.
Baby Wynne was meanwhile having a great time with Luke's sister Jacque.
If a bike is being carried through town or at any race it is likely the crew of Natascha Badmann. But in this case it is Richard Stoffel who finished 6th here last year in M45-49.
Good times at Lava Java – taken over by Wattie Ink and Diamond Back.
The Eneko Llanos family was also out and about today.
Meanwhile on the Queen K it was already busy despite the hot temperatures.
The car traffic came in waves, but it was rarely that open.
This guy was drilling it, not sure if it was for the camera, but he was giving it the stick.
Runners were also busy logging a few miles on the Queen K.
Even Sebastian Kienle managed to get a few miles in.
Kienle stopped briefly and he looked very relaxed.
