Andreev, Lovset win ITU Winter Tri Worlds

Pavel Andreev of Russia and Borghild Lovset of Norway won their first men’s and women’s elite gold medals at the ITU Winter Triathlon World Championship in Jamijarvi, Finland Saturday. The USA’s Brian Smith of Gunnison, Colorado and Emma Garrard of Park City, Utah each finished 7th in the elites.

Andreev, the current European Winter Triathlon Champion, broke away from the field by 80 seconds on the 11.4 kilometer mountain bike section, then held on against a furious, race-best 21:50 10k cross country ski by Norway’s two-time ITU Winter Triathlon World Champion Arne Post. At the finish, Andreev’s 24:08 10k ski was just fast enough to take the win in 1:10:31 and hold off Post by 6 seconds. Brian Smith of the USA posted the men’s 4th-best 11.4k bike split of 26:13 which helped propel him to a career best ITU Winter World Championship showing of 7th place in 1:12:13.

In the women’s elite contest, Borghild Lovset of Norway powered from 8th place after the opening run to a 3-minute lead on the bike, then hung on to win her first ITU Winter Triathlon world title in a time of 1:22:02 by a 2 minutes 33 seconds margin over the runner-up, Sarka Grabmullerova of the Czech Republic. Garrard, the current US Winter Triathlon Women’s National Champion, was second following her 23:04 opening 6k run and finished 7th, 5 minutes 18 seconds back of the winner, for her second straight 7th place finish at winter worlds. .

In the age group contests, Darcy Foley of Sturbridge, Massachusetts won the women’s 30-34 gold. Nicole Freedman of Boston, Massachusetts took the gold in women’s 35-39 and Anna Milkowski of Andover, Massachusetts took the women’s 35-39 silver.
