Beth Potter, Takumi Hojo Win in Portugal

Beth Potter of Great Britain utilized her dominant run to leave behind Emma Lombardi of France by 23 seconds, and Takumi Hojo of Japan ran a 4th-best 30:41 to earn a 9 seconds margin of victory over Seth Rider of the U.S.

Men

Márk DéVay of Hungary led the men’s swim with a 18:24 split that gave him a one-second lead on Takumi Hojo of Japan, 3 seconds on Kenji Nene of Japan, 4 seconds on Daniel Dixon of Great Britain, Gianluca Pozzatti of Italy and Ricardo Batista of Portugal, and five seconds on Seth Rider of the U.S.

Connor Bentley of Great Britain led the field into T2 by six seconds over fellow Brit Samuel Dickinson, 8 seconds over Noah Servais of France and 10 seconds over Hojo.

On the wings of a 4th-fastest 30:41 10k run, Hojo finished in 1:46:21 with a 9 seconds margin on runner-up Rider (30:49 run split) and 12 seconds on third-place finisher Daniel Dixon of Great Britain who closed with a 30:50 run.

Maxime Hueber-Moosbrugger of Belgium scored the day’s fastest run with a 30:12 split that advanced him from a near the bottom of the pack 19:16 swim to 13th place at the line.

Women

Due to a timing error, Beth Potter’s only recorded split was a 6th-best 20:20 swim split that was 6 seconds behind Sophie Alden of Great Britain and Summer Rappaport of the U.S., 4 seconds behind Emma Lombardi of France and Sarah-jane Walker of South Africa, and 2 seconds behind Barbara De Kooning of Netherlands.

While the precise time of Potter’s closing run is not available, it is quite probably that it was significantly better than the fastest recorded 33:37 run split of Emma Lombardi of France, because Potter’s overall time was 1:58:56 – 23 seconds better than Lombardi’s 2nd-place effort.

Lisa Tertsch of Austria took 3rd place overall who combined a 20:30 swim, a 19th best 1:03:33 bike split and a 3rd-best recorded run split of 34:54. Tertsch finished in 2:00:37, 1:41 behind the winner.

While Rappaport was in the mix for a podium through the swim and bike, she did not finish the run.

One month into Russia’s invasion of her home country, Maryna Kyryk of Ukraine finished in 37th place in 2:08:00.
