Chartier, Chura Champions in Tremblant

In the final qualifying race for the 2022 IRONMAN World Championship, U.S. stars Collin Chartier and Haley Chura took top honors at IRONMAN Mont Tremblant.

In the men's race, Josh Amberger of Australia led until midway through the run before Chartier ran him down and closed the deal in 8:08:40 with a 4:31 margin over the Australian and 5:33 over 3rd place finisher Cody Beals of Canada.

In the women's race, Haley Chura of the U.S. moved into the lead early on the bike leg and held off t a late race charge by Jen Annett of Canada. Chura finished in 9:17:21 with a 6:59 margin over the Canadian and 13:17 over third place finisher Rachel Zilinskas of the United States.

Men's Race Recap

Super fish Josh Amberger of Australia was upset on the swim by Antoine Jolicoeur Desroches of Canada, who took the swim honors. The duo charged to a 3 minute lead on the rest of the field. By 15 miles, Amberger took the lead and had a 4 minutes advantage by the 56-mile mark. From this point Chartier began to charge and whittled his disadvantage to 2:15 by T2.

Halfway through the run, Chartier moved past Amberger for the lead. After a 2:45:59 marathon, Chartier crossed the finish line in 8:08:40 with a 4:31 margin over Amberger and 5:33 over third-place finisher Cody Beals of Canada. With Chartier and Amberger already qualified, and Beals to date not taking a slot for 2022, 4th place finisher David Plese should be eligible for a Kona start.

Women's Race Recap

Like Amberger, dominant swimmer Haley Chura was clipped by fellow American Rachel Zilinskas in the water. Soon into the bike leg, Chura took the lead and had no need to look over her shoulder.

By 24 miles of the bike, Chura increased her lead to 4 minutes and by T2 Chura’s lead had ballooned to 5:13.

Jen Annett had chased Chura into second during the bike segment, with Zilinskas in third, with both making inroads on Chura's lead during the opening miles of the marathon. But Chura shrugged off their effort during the back half of the run in order to take victory. Since Chura and Annett were already Kona qualified, Zilinskas punched her ticket for the return to the Big Island. Renee Kiley and Chloe Lane rounded out the top five finishers.
