CU Boulder takes Men’s, Coed team crowns

Individual runners-up Cedric Wane and Jessica Broderick led CU Boulder to the men’s team and combined men’s and women’s team titles at the USA Triathlon Collegiate Nationals Saturday in Lubbock.

Falling just short of team perfection, the CU Buffaloes women’s team were 8 points short of the US Military Academy at West Point for the women’s team title on a cold, windy day marked by light rain and heavy shivering in West Texas. The US Naval Academy women placed 3rd, just two points back of CU.

The CU men’s team win – adding to their 2005 win – earned their second team title in the category since USAT took control of the event in 2003.

The CU men won with a balanced attack, placing four competitors in the top 18. Last year’s third place finisher Cedric Wane took 2nd in 1:49:17, just 23 seconds behind overall men’s winner Chris Stehula of Cal Poly, while Chris Braden took 8th, Bryant Mason 11th, and Will Nabours 18th for a total of 39 points for the Buffaloes’ best four results. Runner-up Cal Poly San Luis Obispo finished well back with 104 points as Stehula’s 1 point win could not make up for 26th, 37th and 40th place finishes by his supporting cast.

The CU combined men’s and women’s teams win gives them four wins in the 2003-2010 USAT era, adding to their 2003-2004-2005 three peat.

The US Military Academy women, led by 4th place individual Ashley Morgan’s 2:06:52 performance, won West Point its first team title of any kind in USAT Collegiate Nationals history. Combined with Morgan’s performance, Marci Nordt’s 14th, Sarah Haight’s 18th and Andrea Filozof’s 24th place finishes added up to 62 points and closed the door on the CU women’s try for a Buffalo teams sweep. Broderick’s 2nd place, combined with Tess Amer’s 13th, Ashley Walker’s 17th and Ashley Scott’s 38th place finishes, left the Buffaloes 8 points short of the victorious Army women.

With their 1-2 record in Men’s and Women’s team competition, CU Boulder outpaced West Point combined teams, whose men were 3rd and women 1st — by 109 to 166 points. Navy took 3rd in combined team scores with a 4th place for the men and 3rd for their women.

"I think it's great to see CU coming back into the mix for [in teams competition] because I know that we have the history of national championships, so it's really exciting," Broderick told USAT media. "I'm looking forward to next few years."
