In search of races that would play on TV for their new World Championship series of eight worldwide events, the International Triathlon Union sought out internationally renowned cities on four continents with iconic backdrops for the action. They scored a hit when Washington DC organizer Chuck Brodsky worked got permission to hold the North American leg in our nation's capital. So Olympic medalists like Simon Whitfield, Jan Frodeno, Bevan Docherty, Emmas Snowsill and Moffatt came to race. On a cloudy to sunny day, rising star Alistair Brownlee topped World Champion Javier Gomez and Miss Moffatt topped her renowned training partner Snowy. Meanwhile, a still recovering from injury Sarah Haskins held US honors with a strong fourth place finish and Andy Potts (4th) and Hunter Kemper (5th) finished ahead of Olympic and World Championship medalists Whitfield (DNF) Docherty (DNF) Frodeno (6th) and Daniel Unger (11th) to represent the red white and blue on home ground. George Washington legendarily threw a silver dollar across it. The day before the race, the Department of Health warned competitors that recent rains might make the bacteria levels unhealthy. But on June 21, the women dived in with no discernible hesitation.

The decisive breakaway of the men's race happened on the swim as Alistair Brownlee, Javier Gomez, Maik Petzold, Hunter Kemper and Andy Potts got 10 seconds on the chasers – which turned into 2 minutes by the end of the bike.

Emma Moffat let Americans Sarah Haskins and Mary Beth Ellis get a 40-second head start on the bike. But she reeled them in on the first lap of the run, then held off Emma Snowsill and Daniela Ryf for a big win that left her tied with Snowsill in the Dextro Energy World Championship Series points after Round 3 of 8.

Andy Potts, coming off wins at Escape From Alcatraz and St. Anthony's, fought his way past Hunter Kemper, who is fighting a hip injury, for 4th place.

Former World Champ Tim Don, Joe Umphenour and Matt Reed chase after the leaders.

Olympic champion Jan Frodeno missed the bike break, but set fastest run on his way to 6th place.

Jarrod Shoemaker, Brad Kahlefeldt , Steffen Justus, Will Clarke and Laurent Vidal ran faster, but could not make up enough ground to pass any of the bike breakaway five.
