DeBoom, Granger take Hawaii

Timothy DeBoom ran down Matt Lieto and Luke Bell to win the 2010 Rohto Ironman 70.3 Hawaii. Belinda Granger took the women's title with a very solid performance all day.

As expected, John Flanagan led the relatively small men's field out of the water. With several big 70.3 races and the REv3 Quassy event happening this weekend, the field had some solid starters nonetheless.

Matt Lieto quickly showed that his brother Chris isn't the only Lieto who can ride fast and clocked the fastest bike split of the day with a time of 2:13:07. He had just received his new Team Trek / K-Swiss Speed Concept and thanked friends and his new machine after the race.

"Thanks tweeps for the good wishes and kind words. @trekspeed concept gets fastest bike split first race in Kona;)!! Bike is SA-Weet!!!" tweeted Lieto.

Luke Bell and Timothy DeBoom were next into transition about a minute apart and set out to pursue the lone leader who wasn't that far up the road. Both Bell and DeBooom caught Lieto and in the end the more experienced DeBoom proved to be too strong. The 2-time Ironman World Champion closed his day with a 1:19:47 run and a total time of 4:04:02 to win the title. Bell crossed the line second about 1.5 minutes later and Lieto held on to the final podium spot.

Bree Wee was the first female Pro out of the water and had about a 40 second lead on Teresa Nelson and another 10 seconds on Belinda Granger.

Granger though charged hard on the bike and her 2:31:10 bike split was 5.5 minutes faster than the time of Wee, and almost 11 minutes faster than the time of Nelson.

Granger added a bit more time to her lead during the run and crossed the line first in 4:34:38. Wee held on to second place and Emily Cocks used a fast run to take third.
