Fettell, Tisseyre win Mooseman
Australian Clayton Fettell smashed the men’s field and Canadian Magali Tisseyre earned a hard fought win over Mary Beth Ellis at Ironman 70.3 Mooseman in Newfound Lake, New Hampshire Sunday.
Fettell came out of the water in 23:05 with a 2:22 lead on Maxim Kriat and 2:48 on Elliot Holtham and 4:46 on Karl Bordine. Fettell then uncorked a race-best 2:18:33 bike on a hilly New Hampshire course which was 4:30 better than Bordine, 10:48 better than Kriat and 12:25 better than Holtham. Fettell then cruised to a 4th-best 1:16:57 run and crossed the finish line in 4:00:10 with a 13:17 margin of victory over runner-up Kriat – the 2010 and 2011 Mooseman champion — and 16:50 over third place Bordine.
Tisseyre, who won this race in 2010, had a tougher task as she faced world class opposition from three-time Ironman champion Mary Beth Ellis of the U.S. and reigning XTERRA World Champion and ITU World Cross Champion and defending Mooseman 70.3 champion Lesley Paterson of Great Britain.
Ellis emerged from the swim in 24:48 with a 1:43 lead on Tisseyre and 2:41 on Paterson. Tisseyre, who had been struggling to regain her best form after a 6th, 4th and 3rd at half Ironman distance races in New Orleans, San Juan and Wildflower, unleashed a race-best 2:40:41 bike that put more distance between her and Paterson (2:47:00 bike) and cut 55 seconds into Ellis’s lead.
On the run, Tisseyre’s 3rd-best 1:23:31 split was 2:27 better than Ellis’ half marathon and led the Canadian to the finish in 4:32:40 with a 2:31 margin of victory over Ellis and 6:30 over Paterson, who took 3rd.
