Fleischmann, Haskins take USAT Elite sprints
Brian Fleischmann topped Cameron Dye by 26 seconds and Sarah Haskins beat Alicia Kaye by 51 seconds Sunday at USA Triathlon’s Elite Development sprint race at Lake Louisa State Park in Clermont, Florida.
Fleischmann finished the 750-meter swim, 20 kilometer bike and 5k run in 53:22, outpacing fellow ITU-ranked elite Cameron Dye (53:48) and US Olympian Jarrod Shoemaker (54:14).
Haskins finished in 57:54, comfortably ahead of runner-up Alicia Kaye (58:45) and third place Sara McLarty (1:00:09).
The race qualified the first three male and female amateur finishers for their USA Triathlon elite licenses, which allows them to race in ITU Continental Cup events and accumulate points toward a potential run at the 2012 Olympics.
The top three male amateurs were Christopher Lutz, 8th in 56:53, Tommy Zaferes, 9th in 56:58, and 16-year-old William Huffman, 10th in 57:09.
The top three women amateurs were 19-year-old Alexandra Weber, 6th in 1:02:33, Gwen Jorgenson, 8th in 1:02:58, and Lauren Gross, 11th in 1:05:23.
Development races are designed to allow athletes ages 16-23 a chance to race with elites and top amateurs and to earn points toward ITU a draft-legal ranking.
