Gentle, Royle win classic Noosa Triathlon

Ashleigh Gentle of Australia is now the Queen of Noosa as she won her 6th Noosa Triathlon title Sunday by a dominating 50 seconds margin over countrywoman Natalie Van Coevorden.

Aaron Royle defended his title and won his 4th Noosa crown by a 3 seconds margin over fellow Aussie Max Neumann.

Women

Holly Grice led the swim with a 20:48 split that gave her a 3 seconds margin over Natalie Van Coevorden, 4 seconds over Brittany Dutton, 5 seconds on Jo Miller, 11 seconds on Annabel Luxford, 12 seconds on Radka Kahlefeldt of the Czech Republic, the lone non-Aussie in contention in the pro field, and 15 seconds on Ashleigh Gentle, who won the 2018 WTS Grand Final in September.

After a women's race-best 1:00:14 bike split, Gentle advanced to 4th place, 38 to 40 seconds behind a trio led by Van Coevorden and including Kahlefeldt and Luxford.

After a dominating 35:14 run split, Gentle finished in 2:00:48 with a 50 seconds margin of victory over Van Coevorden (36:37 run) who prevailed in a photo finish sprint with Kahlefeldt (36:41 run). Both women were timed in 2:01:38.

Men

Ben Shaw of Ireland led the swim with a 18:09 split that gave him a 2 seconds lead on Max Stapley, 5 seconds on Jonathan Sammut, 7 seconds on Aaron Royle, and further back, 47 seconds on Ryan Fisher and 55 seconds on Ryan Bailie.

After a race-best 54:06 bike split, Stapley led the field into T1 by 29 seconds on Royle and Sammut, 1:14 on Fisher, 1:22 on Bailie, and 1:30 on Neumann.

After a 4th-best 33:01 run split, Royle finished in 1:48:51 with a 3 seconds margin of victory on Neumann, who ran a race-best 32:10 split, and 14 seconds on Bailie, who ran 32:32. Ryan Fisher ran 32:41 to take 4th place, 6 seconds back of fellow Ryan Fisher.
