ITU prize money upped again
The International Triathlon Union has continued its trend of increasing event and series prize money, boosting the 2013 World Triathlon Series and World Cup event total prize money as well as making the payouts deeper.
"Not only have we increased the overall prize funds for athletes this year," said ITU President and IOC Member Marisol Casado. "We have also deepened the pool of how many athletes will receive the prize money at World Cup and World Triathlon Series events to encourage National Federations to send athletes to races."
The total prize money for the 8 race World Triathlon Series has increased from $2.06 million to $2.25 million.
The prize purse for the Grand Final in London in September has risen from the 2012 total of $270,000 to $280,000 this year. While the winners’ shares of the Grand Final stay pat at $30,000, payouts will be increasing from 30 to 35 deep.
World Triathlon Series events in Auckland and Yokohama will offer total prize purses of $186,000 up from the $170,000 figure for all WTS events in 2012. The winners’ checks will remain at $20,000, but places 21st through 30th will reward finishers with $800. World Triathlon Series events in San Diego, Madrid, Kitzbühel, Hamburg and Stockholm will offer total prize purses of $176,000 and pay through 20th place. Winners’ rewards will remain $20,000 with places 19th and 20th paying $1,000.
The World Triathlon Series year-end bonus pool will increase from $600,000 in 2012 to $670,000 this year. Winners’ shares of the bonus pool will rise from $60,000 to $70,000. and payouts will go deeper — from 30th place in 2012 to 35th place this year.
Total prize money for the 10 World Cup events has increased at an even high rate, rising by $280,800 from the 2012 World Cup total of roughly $450,000 to a 2013 total of $730,000.
Payouts for all World Cup winners will stay at $7,500, but increases will come from a bigger roster of races and deeper payouts.
World Cup races in Ishigaki, Huatulco, Edmonton, Cozumel, Tongyeong and Guatape will each offer a $68,200 total purse, ranging from $7,500 to the winners to $400 for places 16 through 20. World Cup events in Mooloolaba, Palamos, Tiszaujvaros and Alicante will offer $60,000 total purses, ranging from $7,500 for the winners to $150 for 15th place.
