J Brownlee awesome in Madrid
Another brilliant performance by Jonathan Brownlee allowed him to take the win at the 2013 ITU World Triathlon Series event in Madrid, Spain and with the win of Non Stanford yesterday in the women's event the Brits swept the top spots in Spain. Local favorite Javier Gomez finished second and Ivan Vasiliev finished third.
Brownlee and Gomez were part of a small group that led out of the water and their driving pace whittled that front group down from 7 athletes to 5 and distanced all chasing groups further and further during the 40k bike segment. By the time the 5 reached the bike-run transition their advantage over the chasers had grown to 90 seconds and at that point it appeared almost certain that the podium would come from that group.
Brownlee stormed away from his breakaway group in no time and distanced a hard chasing Javier Gomez with each stride. By the time Brownlee hit the tape 1 hour 50 minutes and 42 seconds he had managed a 50 second advantage and earned his 6th World Triathlon Series title.
"It's a good triathlon course this one, as I keep saying it's a pure triathlon course," said Brownlee. "Our group was incredible there, all the other riders did turns throughout the race and it was a fair race I think, so I enjoyed it but it was tough, it's always tough."
Javier Gomez finished second and Ivan Vasiliev hung tough for third place. Mario Mola ran from the chasing group all the way to fourth place and Italy's Fabian hung on to 5th place.
