Jones, Bennett take 5i50 Kansas City

Jordan Jones of Golden, Colorado and Laura Bennett of Boulder, Colorado both relied on the fastest runs to take the elite titles at the 5i50 Kansas City Triathlon Sunday.

Jones started two minutes back of Jon Bird, James Hadley and Michael Fox after the swim, and then surged to within 40 seconds of Bird after a race-fastest 55:32 bike split. Jones then put a hammerlock on the race with a 31:39 10k – the fastest run of the day. Jones’ 1:49:45 overall time was 22 seconds ahead of runner-up Bird and 4:11 ahead of 3rd place James Hadley of Great Britain.

One week after earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic triathlon team by placing top American woman at the San Diego World Triathlon Series event, Laura Bennett won the Kansas City 5i50 event with a 2nd-fastest 19:19 swim, 3rd-fastest 1:03:50 bike split and the women’s fastest 36:16 run to break the tape in 2:01:34 with a 2:13 advantage over runner-up Jillian Peterson and 3:18 over third place Becky Lavelle.
