Jorgensen, Murray lead Island House

Rio Olympic champion Gwen Jorgensen scored the women’s fastest time on Day 2 and moved up from 3rd to 1st while South African Olympian Richard Murray also scorched Day 2 to take the men’s lead at the three-day Island House Invitational Triathlon in the Bahamas.

The Day 2 Enduro stage consisted of a 750 meter swim, a 5 kilometer run, a 40 kilometer bike leg, a 750 meter swim and a 5k run.

Men

Thanks to a men's-best 15:21 split for the first 5k run and men’s 3rd-best 16:36 for the second 5k run, Richard Murray advanced from 3rd to 1st after Day 2. Murray’s Day 2 best time of 1:49:40 brought him to an aggregate time of 2:42:53 and gave him a 1:05 lead on Cameron Dye, who advanced from 5th to 2nd with a race-best 54:32 split for the 40 kilometer bike leg. Terenzo Bozzone of New Zealand fell from 2nd to 3rd in total time, 1:18 behind Murray, holding close thanks to a 2nd-best 54:57 Day 2 bike split.

Due to a 7th best 1:52:03 split for Day 2, Aaron Royle of Australia fell from 1st to 4th in the overall standings. Brent McMahon of Canada advanced from 9th to 5th in the overall standings thanks to a 4th-best 1:51:32 time for Day 2.

Eric Lagerstrom of the U.S. (2:45:20), Leon Griffin of Australia (2:45:44), Sebastian Kienle of Germany (2:45:49), Joe Maloy of the U.S. (2:45:50), and Lionel Sanders of Canada (2:46:20) finished 6th through 10th and made the cut to race Day 3.

Day 3 will consist of a non-drafting sprint distance triathlon which includes a 750 meter swim, 20 kilometer bike leg and 5 kilometer run.

Women

After her women’s 3rd place Day 1 time of 57:42, Jorgensen unleashed a women’s-best 1:59:11 for the Day 2 Enduro segment which gave her a total time of 2:56:53. That gave Jorgensen a 45 seconds lead on first day leader Holly Lawrence of Great Britain (Day 2 – 2:00:44 split) and a 55 seconds advantage on 2016 ITU WTS World Champion and Island House first day runner-up Flora Duffy of Bermuda (Day 2 – 2:00:20 split).

Jorgensen made up most of her time with women’s race-best 17:07 and 16:52 splits for the first and second 5km runs – 48 and 39 seconds better than her closest competitors.

After a 3rd-best Day 2 time of 2:00:41, Ellie Salthouse of Australia advanced from 6th place to 4th, 2:30 behind the leader. Helle Frederiksen of Denmark fell from 4th to 5th after a Day 2 split of 2:02:08, and Sarah True of the U.S. advanced from 9th to 6th after a Day 2 split of 2:01:20.

Rachel Klamer of Netherlands, Emma Moffatt of Australia (6th-best Day 2 split of 2:01:46), Katie Zaferes of the U.S., and Lauren Goss of the U.S. finished 6th through 10th to make the cutoff for the final day of competition.
