Justin Metzler, Danielle Lewis Capture Oregon 70.3 Crowns

Danielle Lewis of the U.S. combined a 9th-best 18:03 swim, a second-best women’s 2:17:48 bike split, and a by-far women’s-fastest 1:18:45 half marathon to finish in 3:59:33 with a 5:53 margin over Mirinda Carfrae and 7:11 over Heather Jackson of the U.S.
In a gradual recovery of her old form, Mirinda Carfrae took another step forward Sunday as the three-time Ironman World Champion took second at Ironman 70.3 Oregon.
The women’s race began with Hannah Wells of New Zealand posting a 17:23 swim that gave her a 23 seconds lead over Kelly Fillnow of the U.S., 24 seconds over Heather Jackson of the U.S., 27 seconds over Rachel Mensch of the U.S., 30 seconds over Carfrae and 40 seconds ahead of the 9th-best swim by Danielle Lewis.
Lewis leapfrogged into the lead with a women’s second-best 2:17:58 bike split that gave her a 3 seconds lead on Heather Jackson, 2:40 on Hannah Wells, and 2:42 on Mirinda Carfrae. Whereupon Lewis sealed the deal with a women’s fastest 1:18:45 half marathon that brought her to the finish in 3:59:33 with a 5:53 margin over Carfrae and 7:11 on third-place Heather Jackson and 10:27 on fourth place Hannah Wells.

Justin Metzler combined a second-best men’s 16:23 swim, men’s 4th-best 2:07:15 bike split and a men’s fastest 1:11:45 run split to finish in 3:39:57 with a 41 seconds margin over Jack Moody of New Zealand and 2:12 over 3rd-place Kyle Buckingham of South Africa.
Kyle Buckingham led the men’s swim with a 16:23 split that gave him a 3 seconds lead on Metzler, 4 seconds on Fraser Walsh of Australia, 5 seconds on Andy Krieger, 6 seconds on Marty Andrie of the U.S., 7 seconds on Kennett Peterson of the U.S. and 15 seconds on Jack Moody of New Zealand.
Kennett Peterson made a brave breakaway on the bike with a by-far men’s best 2:01:25 split that gave him a 5:28 lead at T2 on Buckingham, 5:30 on Metzler, 6:05 on Jack Moody of New Zealand.
Metzler sealed the win with a race-best 1:11:45 half marathon that brought him to the line in 3:39:57 with a 41 seconds margin over Moody, 2:12 over Buckingham, 2:46 on Marty Andrie of the U.S. and 3:35 on Stephen Kilshaw of Canada.
