Kahsar, Shiver win Collegiate Nationals

Karl Kahsar of the University of Colorado won the men’s individual title and Kaitlin Shiver of the University of Florida won the women’s crown at the USA Triathlon Collegiate Nationals Saturday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Kahsar, a CU grad student who competed for the University of Virginia as an undergraduate last year, finished behind Dustin McLarty of UC Irvine but was awarded the win when McLarty was assessed a 2-minute penalty for a position foul on the bike.

Kahsar’s winning time was 1:57:04. McLarty, who finished second, finished in 1:58:17 including the 2-minute penalty. Brady O’Bryan of UCLA finished 3rd in 1:59:02.

No such post-race penalty confusion dogged the women’s individual contest, as Kaitlin Shiver of the University of Florida finished in 2:10:04 and cruised to a 3-minute 43-seconds margin of victory over runner-up Julie Rechel of the University of Richmond, with Marcie Nordt of the US Military Academy taking 3rd, 4:24 back of Shiver.

The University of Colorado took two team titles, highlighted by a record-low 23 points for the men’s team. Despite 2-minute position foul penalties assessed against three members of the Colorado team, Kahsar (1st in 1:57:04 and no penalty), Chris Braden (4th in 1:59:20), Ryan Bice (5th in 1:59:23) and David Bobka (13th in 2:02:30) topped the runner-up West Point tri squad by 48 points and third place UC Berkeley by 76 points.

Colorado, whose women’s team took 3rd, won the combined men’s and women’s team title with a total of 83 points. The US Military Academy took 2nd with 71 points and UC Berkeley was 3rd with 233 points.

The US Naval Academy, led by Tracy Fridye’s 7th place finish, eked out a narrow victory for the women’s team title with 46 points, just 3 better than the runner-up team, their bitter rivals, the US Military Academy, led by Marcie Nordt’s 3rd place finish. The University of Colorado women’s team, led by 2009 USA Triathlon Collegiate Nationals individual champion Jessica Broderick’s 4th place finish, took 3rd with 60 points.
