Cassandre Beaugrand of France edged Katie Zaferes of the U.S. in a photo finish to take the $20,000 top prize at the Super League Singapore series finale Sunday.
But the big payoff went to Zaferes, whose results in previous races in Jersey, Malta and Mallorca, plus her double points in Singapore, gave her a comfortable margin of victory for the overall women’s series title. Zaferes tallied 113 points for the $100,000 payoff, followed by runner-up Rachel Klamer of Netherlands with 76 points for $50,000, and 3rd place Beaugrand who tallied 65 points for a $25,000 payout.
Zaferes was a little disappointed to be outsprinted by Beaugrand for the weekend win, but had to be comforted by her domination of the series: “I am really happy and a little disappointed because it was so close. I gave it everything I had and it’s always nice to come out on top. It’s been a great series.”
Zaferes had a little hesitation at the end which might have cost her the few millimeters margin by which she lost to Beaugrand: “I was trying to figure out if I should be in the front or if I should stay on her shoulder and wait.”
Beaugrand said she worked hard to improve her form in preparation for the super-hot Singapore round. “Coming into Singapore I trained very hard on my bike to be better. I found it so hard there today but my head was better than my body. It was amazing.”
Men
Jonathan Brownlee of Great Britain dominated the Singapore weekend men’s results with a win at Saturday’s Eliminator format race and a second place in Sunday’s Enduro format contest to tally 46 points for the weekend – 12 points better than Singapore men’s runner-up Henri Schoeman of South Africa and 15 points better than Singapore men’s finale 3rd place finisher Tyler Mislawchuk of Canada.
Brownlee earned $20,000 for the weekend win, Schoeman earned $15,000 for the weekend for his runner-up finish and Mislawchuk took home $10,000 for his 3rd place finish.
Despite an off-form 4th place over the weekend, Vincent Luis of France tallied 107 points for his performances in Jersey, Malta, Mallorca and Singapore, which earned him the $100,000 top prize for the series. Luis rallied from a near-disastrous 1 point finish in the Eliminator format event on Saturday with a 25-point win in Sunday’s Enduro format event to take 4th on the day. Luis needed every single point to edge Henri Schoeman of South Africa, who finished 4th and 3rd on the weekend races, to take the Super League Triathlon series title by 2 points. Schoeman took home $50,000 for his runner-up finish in the series.
Brownlee closed out well to advance to 3rd place in the series, taking home $25,000 for the series and $20,000 for his win in the Singapore round.
Luis was so disheartened after a punctured tire gave him just 1 point in a catastrophic mishap on Saturday, he contemplated withdrawing on Sunday: “I was so down after yesterday, I didn’t know if I wanted to race this Sunday."
On Sunday morning, Luis' coaches asked him if he would like them to do the math for ranking standings. “I said, no, I just want to race. I want to win the race and that’s the only thing I can do and let’s see what happens after. Honestly when I woke up this morning I did not expect that. It’s crazy!”
While he was impassioned and determined to avenge his Saturday result, Luis kept his head on Sunday. “Since the start today, I knew I had to be hard and smart,” Luis told race media. “I didn’t want to lead today, I just wanted to keep with as many people as possible – pure tactics. I wanted to save myself until the last run. I knew I was fresher as I didn’t race as much as them yesterday, so I was waiting for the last run. I saw that Henri wasn’t at his best, so I tried to keep with Jonny as much as possible.”
With Luis’ failure on Saturday, Schoeman calculated that the series was his to lose. “What happened yesterday with Luis, the Championship was definitely mine to lose. Jonny and Vincent made me work extremely hard today, and I think that it made me run really slow at the end. [Still] I came into the weekend wanting to walk away with a solid second, so I am happy.”
After a disappointing 2018 season, Brownlee found a lot of satisfaction in his weekend win. “It means a lot to come here and perform well in the heat,” he told Super League media. “It’s always been a weakness of mine and I think I was one of the fittest athletes out there. If I’m honest, I’ve doubted myself this year – so this gives me a lot of confidence. That was a big performance for me – it shows what I can do.”
