Luis, Zaferes win Super League Jersey
Katie Zaferes defended her 2017 title and Vincent Luis out dueled Henri Schoeman in the two-day multiple sprint format Super League Triathlon – Jersey event on a cool and cloudy day in the Channel Islands near the coast of Normandy.
Men
Luis won the Saturday Triple Mix sessions and the Sunday Enduro contest for a perfect 50 points give the Frenchman, winner of the recent WTS World Championship Grand Final, to out point runner-up Henri Schoeman of South Africa, who finished 2nd on both days to earn $15,000 for the overall runner-up finish.
Luis finished Sunday’s Enduro format event in a total time of 55:48, 6 seconds ahead of Schoeman, 18 seconds ahead of 3rd place Richard Murray, 54 seconds ahead of 4th place Kristian Blummenfelt and 1:24 ahead of 5th place Jonny Brownlee of Great Britain.
Last year’s winner Kristian Blummenfelt of Norway finished 3rd on Saturday and 4th on Sunday to earn 34 points and take home$10,000 for the weekend. Murray finished 5th on Saturday and 3rd on Sunday to score 32 points for 4th overall and earn $6,000 for his efforts. .
Women
Zaferes, who won the Super League – Jersey women’s title last year, overcame the Day One lead by Cassandre Beaugrand of France, who took all three rounds of the Saturday Triple Mix format just ahead of Zaferes. In that format, competitors completed three swim, bike and run segments in differing order with 10 minute rest stops in between. On Sunday, Zaferes led from start to finish of the Enduro format which required competitors to complete three sprint distance swim-bike and run segments in a continuous flow with no rest stops.
Beaugrand, who burst into prominence at age 21 with a win at WTS Hamburg this summer, seemed to prefer the sprints broken up by rest stops while Zaferes, with more experience at the Olympic distance and who finished second at the recent WTS Grand Final.
Beaugrand dominated the Triple Mix on Saturday with three wins, but was outgunned on Sunday and finished 3rd in the Enduro format.
Zaferes had the most well balanced performance as she finished Sunday’s Enduro format in 1:00:37 with a 14 seconds lead on fellow American Kirsten Kasper, 50 seconds ahead of Beaugrand, 1:03 ahead of Georgia Taylor-Brown on Great Britain, and 1:17 ahead of Summer Cook of the U.S.
Combining the Saturday and Sunday points, Zaferes led the weekend with 46 points and $20,000, Beaugrand took 2nd overall with 43 points and $15,000, Kasper took 3rd with 37 points and $10,000, Taylor-Brown took 4th with 28 points and $6,000 and Cook took 5th with 24 points and earning $4,800.
Zaferes and Luis each won $20,000 in the start of the second season of the elite competition of the Super League Triathlon series, which will be contested in five races in 2018-2019. The Jersey round will be followed by Super League races in Malta (27-28 October), Mallorca (November 3-4). Singapore (23-24 February) and Australia (16-17 March) . Each race will offer at least 100,000 pounds prize money and the series will award overall winners $100,000 each and related prize monies for the season’s top 10.
