Matthews, Kaye win DC 5150

Paul Matthews won the men’s title with a 3rd best swim and race-best bike while Alicia Kaye combined a 4th best swim, 3rd best bike and 3rd best run to take women’s pro race at the 5150 Series Washington DC Triathlon Sunday.

Coming off a win at Ironman 70.3 Kansas a week ago, Matthews emerged from the swim just 14 seconds behind Eric Limkemann’s 17:44 and 1 second behind Andrew Starykowicz. Matthews blew open the race with a race-best 55:43 bike which left him with a 1:51 lead over David Thompson and 1:52 over Tim Reed at T2. When the race was done, Matthews’ 5th-best 34:24 run surrendered just 57 seconds to Reed and 32 seconds to Thompson. Matthews hit the finish in 1:49:58 with a 67 seconds margin of victory over runner-up Reed and 19 more seconds margin over 3rd place Thompson at the line.

In the women’s race, Alicia Kaye emerged from the Potomac River in 19:24 – 33 seconds behind Amanda Stevens, 32 seconds back of Tenille Hoogland, 22 seconds back of Becky Lavelle, 18 seconds back of Rebeccah Wassner and crucially, 55 seconds ahead of 2010 Collegiate National Champion, med student and super cyclist Nicole Kelleher.

Kaye then posted a 2nd best 1:02:49 bike which surrendered 32 seconds back to Kelleher but bested Becky Lavelle’s ride by 15 seconds, Rebeccah Wassner’s bike by 34 seconds, and Hoogland’s 40 kilometer effort by 37 seconds.

On the run, Kelleher’s 37:48 10k chopped another 8 seconds off Kaye’s lead, but with Kelleher’s transitions 13 seconds slower, Kaye’s 2:02:22 finish gave her a 30-seconds margin of victory and a nice follow-up to her 2nd place finish to Sarah Haskins at the Toyota Cup Series Cap-Tex Triathlon. Becky Lavelle combined a 19:02 swim, 1:03:04 bike and 38:53 run for 3rd place in 2:03:23.
