McBride, Beals lead Canadian sweep at Victoria

Rachel McBride and Cody Beals took home country wins at Ironman 70.3 Victoria.

McBride started the day 9 seconds back on the swim, then fell 3:23 behind of fellow Canadian Jen Annett’s 2:24:02 split after the bike leg. McBride then overtook Annett 18 kilometers into the half marathon on her way to a 1:28:20 split and a 4:28:03 finish that gave her a 1:20 margin of victory over Annett and 3:45 on 3rd place finisher Jennifer Spieldenner of the U.S.

McBride’s win comes after a second place at the Ironman African Championship in April.

Beals emerged 35 seconds behind fellow Canadian Brent McMahon's leading 24:03 swim. After a race-best 2:10:48 bike split – 4:50 faster than McMahon – Beals opened a 4:19 lead on Canadian Nathan Killam and 4:20 on McMahon. After 10.55 miles of the run, Beals held on to a 3:49 lead on McMahon and 5:59 on Killam. After a 2nd-best 1:16:55 half marathon – 48 seconds slower than McMahon’s split – Beals finished in 3:54:45 with a 3:42 margin over McMahon and 8:05 over Nathan Killam for a 1-2-3 Canadian sweep of the men’s podium.

Beals’ victory was his second of the 2018 season, coming after his win at Ironman 70.3 Taiwan in March.
