Mr. and Mrs. Bayliss take Ibiza

It was Bayliss Family Day at Ibiza as husband Stephen edged little known Peru San Ildefonso of Spain by 2:37 and wife Bella crushed the women’s field at the ITU Long Distance World Series event in the famed Spanish resort Sunday.

Stephen Bayliss emerged first from the 4km swim in 51:10, three seconds behind Rasmus Stubager of Denmark and two seconds back of top swimmer San Ildefonso. Bayliss then took control with a race-best 3:14:44 bike – 1:26 up on San Ildefonso and 4:02 faster than Stubager. On the 30km run, Bayliss posted a second-best 1:58:50 which increased his margin over San Ildefonso by 32 seconds. Bayliss crossed the line in 6:07:41 with a 2:37 margin over the Spaniard and 9:13 over third place David Castro of Spain, who closed fast with a run that was one second faster than Bayliss’s 30k effort. Stubager faded to 6th with a 2:09:17 run.

Bella Bayliss came out of the swim with a third-best 1:06:38, 3:21 back of Saleta Castro of Spain and one second back of Zeljka Saban of Croatia, but a handy 21:23 ahead of Kristin Lie of Norway, who would prove to be her closest (not very) pursuer.

Bayliss nailed down the win with a race-best 3:39:31 bike, which was 12:20 faster than Lie, 42:33 faster than Castro and 43:25 faster than Saban.

Bayliss could then easily afford to give back 7:26 to Lie’s women’s race-best 2:15:55 run, which still left Scotland’s proud long course star with a final time of 7:13:31 and a 27 minutes 1 second margin of victory. Saleta Castro of Spain took third, 44:54 back of Bayliss, and Saban, who struggled through a 2:47:28 run, finished 4th, 1:08:25 back of Bayliss.
