Neumann, Crowley Win Ironman Cairns

Max Neumann of Australia won on the strength of a race-best 2:41:12 marathon and Aussie Sarah Crowley won by way of a women’s-fastest 4:48:10 bike split at Ironman Cairns.

Neumann crossed the finish line in 7:52:53 with a 2:17 margin over Braden Currie of New Zealand and Crowley finished in 8:59:40 with a 5:36 advantage over fellow Aussie Radka Kahlefeldt. Neumann and Crowley took home $25,000 apiece for their winning efforts at the Asia-Pacific Championships.

Men

Sam Appleton of Australia led pro men out of the water with a 46:31 split that gave him a 7 seconds lead over Max Neumann and Braden Currie, who tied with equal 46:38 splits. Ben Phillips of New Zealand trailed by 4:02 with a 4th-best 49:33, and Australians Tim Van Berkel and Blake Kappler posted 5th-fastest 50:04 splits.

Appleton maintained his lead with a race-best 4:20:02 bike split which gave him a short lead over Currie (4:20:08 bike split) and Neumann (4:20:42 bike split). Trailing by 11 minutes at T2 were Tim Van Berkel (4:31:37 bike split), Henrik Goesch of Finland (4:31:23 bike split) and Ben Philipps of New Zealand (4:31:59 bike split).

It took the run to sort out the final tally as Neumann finished with a 2:41:12 marathon to take the win in 7:52:53. Currie concluded his day with a 2:44:32 run split that left him 2:17 arrears in second place, and Sam Appleton ran a 2:54:44 marathon to finish 3rd – 12:40 behind the winner.

Pro Women

Sarah Crowley led the women’s swim in 53:59 which gave her a 2 seconds margin over fellow Aussie Radka Kahlefeldt, and 3:50 over Kate Bevilaqua.

Crowley surged with a by-far women’s-best 4:48:10 cycling leg which gave her a 5 minutes lead over Kahlefeldt (4:53:44 bike split) and roughly 20 minutes over Bevilaqua, Kylie Simpson and Kristin Liepold.

On the run, Crowley finished in 8:59:40 and Kahlefeldt virtually matched Crowley’s 3:12:18 marathon to take 2nd place, 5:36 behind the winner. Kylie Simpson made up a great deal of her swim deficit with a women’s-best 3:01:58 marathon to finish in third place, 19:41 behind the champion.
