PA triathlete killed in hit and run
Paula Jones of Factoryville, PA was killed in a hit and run collision while out running at Harveys Lake, PA this past Sunday. The 31-year old mother was reportedly getting ready for her first long course triathlon in late June.
According to the Times Leader newspaper "Jones, 31, of Factoryville, Wyoming County, was struck by a Honda CRV just after 6 p.m. on Lakeside Drive. An autopsy showed Jones died from from multiple traumatic injuries due to being struck by a motor vehicle, and that her death has been ruled a homicide, Luzerne County Coroner Bill Lisman said."
Michael Scavone, 50 of Harveys Lake is the alleged driver of that Honda CRV.
The article in the Times Leader also states "police said they found the damaged Honda CRV in the driveway of Scavone’s residence on Brook Street, Harveys Lake. Scavone’s mother, Rosemary Scavone, told officers her son just arrived home and “was probably drunk” and sleeping. Scavone was read his Miranda warnings at 9:15 p.m., admitting to investigators he “struck something” after consuming alcohol at various bars for several hours."
According to another article in the Times Leader, Scavone had previously been sentenced in 2010 to a year of house arrest for his role in a $3.6 million cocaine distribution ring, and had 6 months probation added for a separate case where he was caught operating a boat at a high rate of speed, and measured a blood-alcohol level of .158 percent, an hour after operating the boat.
Paula Jones is survived by her husband Brian Jones and their 14-year old daughter Kayla.
Harveys Lake where the accident occurred is the swim venue for the Wilkes-Barre Triathlon, an event that uses to be one of the East Coast racing pearls, and the area where Timothy O'Donnell grew up.
