Reed and Haskins repeat
Matty Reed and Sarah Haskins repeat as victors at the Lifetime Fitness Triathlon in Minneapolis, Minnesota. With his win Reed now leads the 2010 Race To The Toyota Cup, while 3rd place getter Mary Beth Ellis leads the women's standings.
The men
Cameron Dye led the men out of Lake Nokomis, a few seconds up on Nicholas Vandam and Matty Reed.
Once on the bike, Cameron Dye put down the hammer and padded his lead quite nicely with the fastest bike split. Along those lines, not many other Pros can say that they took a minute on the bike out of Matty Reed and David Thompson, and Dye did exactly that. 2-time Ironman world champion Craig Alexander raced the Lifetime Fitness event too and was in a solid position after the bike.
Dye though didn't quite have the running legs today and dropped back to 6th position. Defending champion Reed looked very fast today and crossed the finishline first with a 32:30 run split. Matt Chrabot finished second and Alexander rounded out the podium. Andrew Yoder crashed hard on his bike and according to his coach Matt Dixon has "plenty of bruises" to show for his work today.
"I didn't feel awesome but just had to be mentally in the game," said Reed. "I felt 100x better than I did in Philly. Still not at my best, but getting there!"
The women
Swim ace Sara McLarty had a one minute lead on Rebeccah Wassner, Pip Taylor and defending champion Sarah Haskins coming out of the water and soon was lying along on her bike.
McLarty actually managed the third fastest bike split, but Haskins had the fastest bike split among the women and gained that minute back. Haskins actually caught McLarty around mile 18, but could not shake the Floridian. Wassner's second fastest bike split wasn't quick enough to catch the front two, but put her in good position for the run.
Haskins though flew away during the run and crossed the line first almost 2 minutes ahead of runner-up Wassner. Third place went to Ellis who had a solid day throughout. Despite a relatively slow run of 44:01, McLarty held on to forth place.
"My race did go pretty much as planned, can't complain about a win," said Haskins to slowtwitch. "I was a bit nervous as to how my body would feel as I was not resting too much for this race with London in two weeks."
