Rev3 Maryland Features the Oly Distance
The Rev3 Triathlon series featured a pro purse for its Olympic distance race. With only two more events left in the 2012 season, in Anderson, South Carolina and Venice, Florida, the professional athletes raced for money and points in Maryland's Olympic distance race.
On a cold and rainy day Eric Limkemann took the men's race with a convincing win over Kyle Leto. Nicole Kelleher breezed to a 1-minute victory in the women's race.
Going into the Maryland event Richie Cunningham was leading the series, which awards points to those demonstrating abilities across the distance disciplines. Leto edged closer to Cunningham in the series points by placing two spots in front of the Aussie. Kelleher put a little distance between herself and Malaika Homo—the two are third and fourth in the series—and each edged closer to series leader Lauren Goss.
Lance Armstrong raced the unsanctioned half-Ironman distance, cruising to a win in 4:10 and change, almost 20 minutes up on the next male finisher. The "Half Full" event was designed as a charity event benefiting the Ulman Cancer Fund (Doug Ulman, a cancer survivor, is the executive director of the Lance Armstrong Foundation).
The race did engender controversy. The outspoken Cunningham, while noting the charitable element to the Half Full, was critical on his web page of the decision not to sanction this particular event in order to allow Armstrong's participation. (Rev3 sanctions its other events).
